Martha Tapp
A carrier with a parcel round, two rooms above the store, and a Sunday planned for her mare.
Look closer at the illustration ↗Martha drives the lighter spring cart on her carrier's round six days a week. Dolly, her grey mare, is eighteen that spring. Martha would like her to go to the Turnout once in the year when nobody wants anything from her except to look at her.
She has bought blue ribbon for Dolly. Her father Reuben has quietly bought crimson for Bracken, and each has assumed the other would come along. With both plans finally spoken, there are two horses to prepare.
Martha lives in two rooms above the carrier's store by the yard gate. After wishing Reuben goodnight, she takes down her straw hat and replaces its old brown band with a little of the blue ribbon. She sews it on properly before putting out the lamp.
