Clara’s dressmaking shop
Across from the cobbler’s, a lit shop window and rooms upstairs.
Clara Mallowdene’s window faces Ambrose’s across Amberwick Passage, a little nearer the bend. In summer, with their doors open, she can ask him a question without crossing the street. In winter, she comes over and takes the chair beside his bench.
Her shop opens onto the foot of the stairs. Above it are her rooms, with a high shelf for things she likes to look at: a blue bowl, a pot with the wrong lid, and a small wooden bird bought on an errand for buttons. One shutter catches near the bottom when she closes for the evening.
